Photographing Diversity
The assignment this week in my photography class is meant to force us out of our comfort zone, get us to step into another person’s shoes etc… We did a writing assignment today where we chose several key factors about ourselves, gender, race, age, ethnicity, etc and then wrote a letter about that new person. I wrote a letter from the point of view of an African American lesbian. Or at least I tried. See, I have NO IDEA what it’s like to be an African American lesbian woman living in Salt Lake City. And now, of course, only after having written this letter… does the instructor tell us that we have to photograph this person. Or take photographs from their point of view. Again, I have NO IDEA what it’s like to be an African American lesbian living in Salt Lake City. Advice? Help? Are you an African American woman who also happens to be homosexual? Would you want a free lunch or dinner with a random stranger who wants to pick your brain about what’s it’s like to live in your world? :) *sigh* Why couldn’t I have written a letter from the perspective of a white, heterosexual, male?
